This is the story of one such musician.
Joe Whyte learned to play guitar in the febrile early punk scene in the small Scottish town of Airdrie and went on to play in a myriad of middling bands in the subsequent years with little success. This book tries to capture the dark humour and dismay in never reaching the apex of music.
Carving out a career in the NHS in frontline mental health services, music always remained a constant and he joined Jericho Hill, a Johnny Cash tribute band in 2009.
This story takes in the on the road madness, the mundanity and the world of sheer weirdness encountered by the band in the years on tour thereafter. We revisit Airdrie in the seventies and take a detour into the rave and party scene of nineties Glasgow on the way.
Including encounters with Johnny Rotten, The B52’s, Ian McCulloch, Ally McCoist, Black Lace, The Buzzcocks and Billy Connolly along the way, this is the story of the other musicians who never graced the pages of MOJO or played at Live Aid.
This is the story of ordinary people, playing extraordinary music and making audiences happy, sad and whatever else. This is the story, not only of Jericho Hill but of all of the jobbing musicians who do it simply for the love of the music.
Joe Whyte is a staff writer for Vive Le Rock magazine and contributes regularly to Sea Angler magazine. He has previously written for Louder Than War magazine and website. He has contributed articles and pieces to books and articles on The Smiths, The Clash, Oasis and Gibson Guitars.
He lives in Glasgow and has spent 40 years working in frontline NHS mental health services.
