Outsider Artists: The Story of Paranoid Visions is a no-budget, no-compromise documentary chronicling the four-decade journey of one of Ireland’s most enduring and provocative punk bands, Paranoid Visions. Formed in 1981 in Dublin’s underground, the band has remained defiantly DIY in both ethos and output—still writing, recording, and releasing music on their own terms more than 40 years later.
Filmed independently over six years by CLIFFORD CLIFFORD PRODUCTION—a father-and-son duo comprised of Dave Clifford (editor of VOX Magazine, 1980–83) and musician/filmmaker Greg Clifford—this is a documentary built from the same resilient, self-taught, and rebellious spirit it celebrates. It’s not just a film about a band; it’s a lens through which to explore the cultural and social conditions that made punk not just music, but a movement.
The documentary uses Paranoid Visions as a springboard to examine broader themes: the DIY punk ethos, Ireland’s socio-political climate, emigration, the role of women and equal rights in punk, resistance to institutional abuses (including that of the Church), anarcho-punk’s radical self-sufficiency, fashion as protest, and the thriving subcultures of fanzines and cassette tape duplication.
With a rotating cast of approximately 35 members since its formation—while core members Deko Dachau (vocals) and Peter PA Jones (guitar) have remained constants—Paranoid Visions’ story is as chaotic, inspiring, and unrelenting as punk itself. The documentary features intimate interviews with current and former band members, as well as punk luminaries including John Robb (The Membranes), TV Smith (The Adverts), Pete Holidai (The Radiators From Space), Dick Lucas (Subhumans), and Steve Ignorant (Crass)—a pivotal figure in shaping the band’s direction. It also includes voices from a new generation of Irish punk artists, such as Meryl Streek and Vulpynes.
Behind the camera, Dave Clifford served as researcher, cinematographer, and visual effects contributor, while Greg Clifford handled editing, interviews, and additional camera work. Self-funded, self-taught, and self-motivated, Outsider Artists is a DIY film about a DIY band, made by DIY filmmakers.
This is not just a music documentary. It’s a story of defiance, creativity, and bloody-minded resilience. Whether you're a fan of punk or not, this is a film that speaks to anyone who's ever felt like an outsider—and found power in it.
